Key Dates Coming Up:

University of Leicester and MSC Medicine and Allied Health Summer School – Post 16 (Year 12) and Pre-16 (Year 10 & Year 11)

The University of Leicester is pleased to be running two residential summer schools in July for students who are interested in medicine and other allied health courses. It is completely free for students to attend and it is a fabulous opportunity to experience what studying medicine or another allied health subject at university is like, as well as experience living in university accommodation. Year 10 and Year Medicine Calling Careers Evening – Thursday 7^th April, 5:00-7:30pm

Students in Years 10 and 11 who are interested in finding out more about the varied and exciting careers in mental health, including psychiatry, psychology and mental health nursing, are encouraged to attend our careers evening at the University of Leicester. At this free event, students will have the opportunity to hear from current healthcare professionals about their experiences working in the NHS, take part in an interactive workshops, as well as receive a certificate of attendance for their portfolio. One parent or guardian is welcome to accompany their son, daughter or dependent to the event and refreshments will be provided.  To apply​, students will need to complete an online application form with a parent or guardian present. Applications close: Thursday 31^st March 2022.

University Hospitals of Leicester Webinars, suitable for students in Years 9+

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions in the NHS, and difficulty of securing clinical work experience, the University of Leicester is pleased to collaborate with the University Hospitals of Leicester in order to host two online webinars, designed to give students an insight into working as a doctor in the hospitals of Leicester, as well as provide students with all the information they need to pursue a career in medicine. Students will hear from a range of consultant doctors about their experiences, as well as speak to junior doctors about their day to day role. Both webinars will take place on Microsoft Teams in April, see information below:

• Everyone can be a Lifesaver: A Doctor’s Career, Friday 1^st April, 5:30-7:00pm
• So you want to Save Lives? How to get into Medicine, Friday 8^th April, 5:30-7:00pm

Students can register to attend one or both webinars by completing a registration form. Registrations close on Thursday 31^st March 2022.

Because of RPA (raising the participation age) legislation, students have to do some sort of learning.

Students may choose to:

• Stay at School, go to a College or Sixth Form and study full time courses
• Get a job and take a work related course alongside it such as an OCR National, BTEC, City and Guilds or other accredited course
• Be Self Employed but you will also need to do some accredited learning or training course
• Volunteer for 20 hours or more but will need to do some accredited learning alongside it, offered by the organisation or independent of it
• Do an Apprenticeship or other accredited training courseIf students have a learning difficulty or SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities), a Statement or an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan), then we will talk to them about their ‘Local Offer’.

The qualifications gained at the end of Year 11 will have a large impact on what students can do, especially at which Level they can study or learn: See table below
